5PITP8PUR retro style handsetApr 04, 2012
By Sheffield, C.
I'm shocked how useful it's turned out to be.
This thing can be cradled between shoulder and chin, just like a real phone!
The handset is of seemingly simple yet durable plastic construction. Make sure your phone has a 3.5mm jack or you'll have to buy a separate adapter. Older cell phones have 2.5mm in-port jack and I think this smaller jack is more common.
So I'm thrilled to report that the PIT8PUR is everything I'd hoped for!

4Very slim, light and usefulOct 30, 2012

If you find that your speaker phone just doesn't provide a good enough call experience, you'll appreciate a handset. It helps if you really want to have a quiet conversation in public, it's difficult to hear the other party, or you want to minimize background noise for the other party. On my Samsung Galaxy Note it will automatically shift from speaker phone to handset as soon as I plug the handset in the jack.

Another reason for a handset is to minimize smartphone radiation around the head. I prefer this to earpiece and over-the-head devices. While those devices are hands-free, I find the time it takes to untangle wires and put it in/on my ears isn't worth it for a phone call (I don't use bluetooth devices to minimize radiation exposure). I looked at the cute retro handsets that are big and curved. A curved handset would probably minimize ambient noise even more for the other party, but those retro handsets are too bulky. (I also worry about the material in those retro handsets being the toxic plastic used in many soft products.) In contrast, this handset is flat and very slim so you can take it anywhere. It's also very light. Handset is about 2" longer than necessary but maybe some people have a longer distance between their ear and their mouth. I think they could shorten it.

There is no volume control on this handset so you will need to adjust volume (and push 'mute') from your smart phone. The upside is this probably contributes to the handset being very light so I don't mind. The absence of buttons and such also means it doesn't need much protection other than to keep it clean.

When I plugged it in the first time, it did not appear to work; I had to twist and press it more. While on a call, if you move in a way that pulls the handset out of the jack, you can lose the call. I am not sure if they could make the jack fit tighter since it seems like a normal fit. This only happened once or twice when I was lying on the floor and moved my smart phone around such that it pulled on the plug. Other than that, no problems.

You can use this to listen to any sound on your smart phone, e.g. listen to a YouTube video in a cafe right after a phone call. For listening to your music, you'll obviously want to use earbuds or something you don't have to hold.

1Didn't Work for Me... TwiceOct 26, 2012
By Jenna Glatzer
No matter what I did, this would not work with my iPhone 4. I tried numerous times on numerous calls, and although I could hear the person on the other end, they could never hear me at all. I don't mean that they heard some static or a bad connection-- I mean literally nothing. Thinking I just got a defective one, I bought another... and it did exactly the same thing. I started thinking there was something wrong with my phone. There wasn't. There's something wrong with quality control on this handset.

I purchased this item for my mother. She really loves it. She says she receives compliments on it all the time. It is easy for her to use and the sound is clear.

2Static!Aug 04, 2012

Small and lightweight. Major static when in use. Beware iphone users, this is not compatible with your phone. You get what you pay for....
